In 1997, Gateway Church purchased the old Acomb Primary School building and began a process of renovating and extending the building. Renamed as the Gateway Centre, our building serves as a meeting place for Gateway Church, as well as many other local groups.

Facilities

The Gateway Centre is an excellent venue for all kinds of uses, with meeting rooms suitable for everything from large conferences (up to 250 delegates) to one-to-one counselling and everything in between.

Alongside meeting rooms of various sizes, the Centre is well equipped with a large kitchen, toilet facilities and good disabled access.

While on-site parking is limited, there is a large public car park just 2 minutes walk from the Gateway Centre. There are a good range of local amenities along Front Street, offering a range of food and shopping options.

History

Starting life as Acomb County Primary School, the Grade II Listed Gateway Centre was built in the 1890s. Many local people visiting the Centre recall fond memories of attending the school.

After a new, purpose-built school was built off Holgate Road, the building fell into disrepair. Gateway Church purchased the building in 1997, quickly renaming it as the Gateway Centre. Over the next couple of years, restoration of the building took place, including the addition of a second floor to the main building.

In 2008, a second phase of building work was completed, extending the facility to its current size. This work added a large hall to the rear, as well as an airy-feeling atrium and an upgraded kitchen.
